Bella Abzug Park, formerly Hudson Park and Boulevard, is a vibrant public space
in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards District, honoring Bella Abzug—a pioneering
feminist, civil rights activist, lawyer, and U.S. Representative. The park’s creation
reflects women’s leadership and vision in urban design and construction.
The environmentally sustainable design was led by Elizabeth Silver of Michael
Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc. Elizabeth, as project lead, oversaw the entirety
of design, entitlement, and construction processes. Her management of a
multidisciplinary team was instrumental in the successful completion of play
areas, plazas, and fountains, while effectively addressing the challenges
presented by the newly constructed Metropolitan Transit Authority No. 7 subway
station beneath and park-level entrances. Equally essential was Michele O’Connor of Langan, the infrastructure engineer of record. Michele directed the engineering and survey teams, ensuring seamless coordination with architects, landscape designers, and city regulators. Her technical expertise enabled the successful delivery of four blocks of new city streets and infrastructure—Hudson Boulevard—integral to the park’s functionality. The collaboration between Elizabeth and Michele exemplifies the power of women’s leadership in the built environment. Their partnership was the foundation for success, demonstrating that women’s contributions were not only central but indispensable. Today, Bella Abzug Park is more than a green space—it is a dynamic community hub offering yoga, fitness classes, dance parties, concerts, and movie nights. The park stands as a living tribute to Bella Abzug and to the women whose expertise and vision made this transformative project possible, shaping a space that inspires and serves the community.
