The Google St. John’s Terminal project transformed a 1930s freight terminal into a vibrant 1.3 million square foot anchor office for Google’s Hudson Square Campus, setting a new benchmark for adaptive reuse and sustainable workplace design in New York City. Turner Construction provided construction management services for the nine story overbuild, which retained the original rail structure while introducing state-of-the-art systems, biophilic design, and LEED Platinum performance. Under the leadership of Project Executive, Alexandra Schmidt, the team delivered one of the city’s most complex conversions, integrating modern infrastructure with a historically significant shell to create a workplace that connects people, nature, and innovation. Alexandra oversaw every phase from preconstruction through closeout, aligning diverse stakeholders, consultants, and trade partners toward the project’s shared vision of a resilient, high-performance environment. Her leadership demonstrates mastery of large- scale project leadership, an area where women remain underrepresented in construction. The project’s scope included advanced MEP coordination to support Google’s digital and wellness infrastructure, integration of reclaimed materials from the original terminal, and creation of public green spaces and terraces that extend the Hudson River Park experience into the urban fabric. Alexandra’s technical insight and strategic decision making ensured the project achieved both sustainability excellence and long-term operational resilience. The Google St. John’s Terminal project stands as a testament to how women’s leadership can shape sustainable, community driven spaces at scale, preserving the past, elevating the present, and inspiring the future of New York’s built environment.
