Year:

As part of an integrated Design Build team, Dattner Architects is leading the design for the new Ground Transportation Center (GTC) at JFK International Airport. The project includes reconstruction of the Central Terminal Area roadways to a network that is more customer friendly and navigable; a new 2,000 vehicle parking garage; and a new Pedestrian Bridge. As a Design Build project with phased, fast-tracked construction, portions of the project are already in service, while construction is completed for other portions–demonstrating the complex logistical challenges the integrated team worked through. The GTC garage serves as the centerpiece of the new development. A naturally ventilated structure, its facades are open screen walls, which reveal the expression of the parking structure and the activity inside but transcend its functional expression through unexpected materiality– notably, the use of timber slats that provide visual relief from the hardscapes of the roadway network. Glazed circulation towers punctuate the Western and Southern facades and carry up as design features on the rooftop plaza, serving as beacons marking the circulation elements. The use of bold colors on the interior stair walls and interior elevator lobbies further reinforce intuitive architectural wayfinding. A Pedestrian Bridge with twisted canopy connects the rooftop to Terminal 1 and serves as a monumental gateway to the Central Terminal Area, identifiable from both the roadways and the air. Unique for an infrastructure mega-project, the Dattner Architects-led architectural team was entirely women, including Partner Gia Mainiero, Lola Rodriguez, Kristy Phillips, Soumya Rao, Julie Janeo, Erica Dume, Kathy Mu, Gina Rustami, Valerie Farber, Tara Marandino and Harriet Andronikides. Female leadership in the Skanksa-Halmar JV team included Anisa Dhimarko and Kimberly Maher, and female Engineering leadership included Cassandra Dion and Shahnavaz Eilbeigi of Parsons Transportation Group. Women leadership at the PANYNJ JFK Redevelopment program includes Jessica Forse and Gina Bigler.
