Katharine Cotheal Budd remodeled 10 Gramercy Park South in 1909 and lived there for about 20 years. As a Paris-trained architect, Budd lobbied the École des Beaux-Arts to admit women, helping pave the way for future women architects such as Julia Morgan. At her Gramercy Park home, she became landlady to a bohemian group of tenants, including artist Robert Henri and the lesbian, publishing and painting couple Anna Sankey and Elizabeth Allen. By 1916, Budd applied to become one of the first female members of the New York chapter of the AIA.
