The Robert A. Iger Building, the new NYC headquarters for The Walt Disney Company in Manhattan, is a vertical campus uniting news, media, and production teams within a single, dynamic environment. Designed by SOM, the building spans an entire city block in Hudson Square, reflecting the local and historic architectural context through its green terracotta facade and rhythmic setbacks. The building balances elegance and functionality–offering column-free studios, state-of-the-art broadcast spaces, and collaborative terraces with sweeping views of Lower Manhattan. With women leading key aspects of the architecture, engineering, landscape design, and branding, the headquarters exemplifies what it means to be “Built by Women.” Julia Murphy, Managing Partner at SOM, served as principal-in-charge and the key point of contact from the competition entry through construction. She led the crucial macro-programming phase to develop, locate, and confirm the major program elements. Meredith Neistadt was the Project Manager, overseeing day to day details through design and construction of this complex downtown development. The design of the building was led by Qiyao Li who conceived of the distinctive green terracotta facade. Other key contributors include Stella Dourtme and Menxing Wang. The building is all-electric, certified LEED Platinum, and uses high-efficiency mechanical systems, stormwater reuse, and bird-safe glazing to minimize environmental impact and anticipate a net-zero future. Additionally, the integrated storytelling throughout the building, led by Kasey Bill’s from SOM’s Graphics team, creates a cohesive experience, reinforcing The Walt Disney Company’s brand identity for both employees and visitors.
